Why Use Blogs?
As I am sure you are aware, blogging is a very
popular internet activity. For this section I am
going to make the assumption that you understand
what a blog is and how they work. If you need the
general sort of information on blogs/blogging you
can learn more than you ever wanted to at
Wikipedia.
As an internet marketer, my only interest in blogs
revolves around their value in my marketing efforts.
In other words, I am only interested in blogs to the
extent of how I can use them to generate interest in
my websites that are selling products and/or
services. While blogs can be a very effective way to
communicate with your website visitors.
Backlinks from Blogs
One of the basic requirements for achieving high
rankings for your website in the SERPS is to have
numerous backlinks. A backlink is simply a link on
another website that points back to your site. You
can go out and start soliciting other websites to
furnish you with a link and you may be successful,
but it is usually quicker to simply go out and
create your own backlinks. Blogs are a great tool
for doing so.
You accomplish this by writing
a short two to three hundred word piece of content (article)
about the product you are selling. You insert an
anchor text link in your blog that links back to
your site. Publish the blog and now you have a
backlink to your money site. Want to add 100
backlinks to your site? Then publish 100 blogs. I
know that may sound like a monumental task, but it's
not. Building blogs is a quick process.
Blogger Blogs
You can setup two brands of
blogs. The fastest and easiest blog to start is a
Blogger blog. Simply go to the Blogger.com website
and register for a free account. Follow the
instructions on that site for building (publishing)
one of their blogs. This blogging service is free of
charge and owned by Google.
The benefits of these sorts of
blogs is that they are free and easy to create and
you do not need to own a domain address to build
one. But that also means that these blogs are hosted
on the Blogger servers and you lose some control
because of that.
While you are able to edit and publish to your blog
at will, the ultimate control of the blog belongs to
Blogger. If they decide that your blog violates
their policy in some way, they can delete your blog
at will. Because of this trait I only use the
Blogger blogs as disposable blogs. In other words
they are blogs that I build with the sole intent of
providing a backlink to my money sites. If they are
deleted I don't care. I simply build more.
WordPress Blogs
The second brand of blog is
the WordPress Blog. These blogs offer a bit more
stability because they are built on your own domain.
This does not mean that you have to build a site, it
just means that you need a domain address. The blog
can be the only function of that domain if you don't
intend to build out the site.
If you are using the hosting
that I recommend on this site, then you are using a
host that offers the cPanel interface to manage your
site(s). Included in the cPanel interface is a
function called Fantastico. Within the Fantastico
function is an automatic setup procedure for
building a WordPress blog on your domain. It is a
very simple process. Being that the blog is on your
domain (and server) you have total control and have
eliminated the risk of your blog being deleted.
To add content to these blogs
simply write a short article, insert a backlink to
your money site and post it to your blog. Many folks
are developing what are called "plugins" for the
WordPress blogs. These are applications that are
often available for free, and sometimes they come
with a price tag. One of these such plugins is an
automated content generator that will add content to
your WP blog based on the parameters you establish
within the plugin. There are many other plugins
available and a Google search for "WordPress Plugins"
will turn up quite a few.
Setting Up
A Blog Network
There are some very clever
network linking strategies that you can use to make
your blogs more effective. These sorts of setups are
referred to as blog networks (also referred to as
blog farms)... here is the short
version.
Let's assume you have a site that sells a guide that
shows you how to teach a dog some tricks. You have
built your site and now you want to get that site
ranked highly in the search engines. In order to do
that you are going to need numerous backlinks to
your site from other websites.
I start the network by setting
up a WordPress blog as my "base blog". It of course
includes a link to my money site. This is a blog
that I will occasionally add quality content to. I
will also setup several Blogger blogs that link to
each other, the base WP blog and of course my money
site.
