The Foundation
I think it can be argued that keyword research is
the most important aspect of building your online
business. If you build the foundation of your
business on the wrong keywords you will undoubtedly
fail. Find the keywords with the maximum earning
potential and you will pave your streets to success.
A single keyword can produce thousands of dollars
per month in revenue for your business.
Some may argue that the niche
research is more important than the keyword
research. I can see their point, but I disagree.
Niche research involves the discovery of what is hot
and what is not. You will watch trends and many
other media outlets to determine what the markets
are seeking. Of course this is vitally important,
but if you cannot uncover workable keywords to use
to market that niche, then you will go nowhere with
it.

research, please see that section on this website.
The Chicken or the
Egg?
| You have no doubt heard the
question of the ages. What came first, the chicken
or the egg? We shall never know. In internet
marketing terms you could ask, "what comes first,
the niche or the keyword"? Do you first uncover a
promising niche market and then mine for money
making keywords, or do you mine for the money making
keywords and go into whatever niche market they
represent? |
 |
The truth is that you will
approach it from both aspects and often a
combination of the two. Conducting niche market and
keyword research is much more of an art form than an
exercise in science. You will develop your research
discovery abilities through hands on work in the
trenches while actually doing it.
The Purpose of
Keywords
Before we get further into keyword research let's
establish why they are so critical in your business.
What do we use them for?
The keywords are used for one
thing. Bringing traffic to your website, and it all
starts with a simple search by your prospective
customer. You will need to determine which keyword
or keyword phrases people are typing into the search
engines in order to find products such as yours.
You will need to be able to
think in the same way the masses are thinking when
they search out a product or a solution to their
needs. There are many ways that people will search
out for their solutions, but in most cases their
search will begin by typing a keyword or a keyword
phrase into the Google search box.
Not All Keywords are Alike
People use different keywords
or variations of keywords to search for different
things. The best strategy to use with your research
is to use your keyword selection process to zone in
and capture a targeted prospect for your product.
Some keywords have a higher commercial intent than
others.
For example, somebody
searching for "wood working supplies" may or may not
be looking to purchase wood working supplies.
Somebody searching for "free wood working ideas"
probably wouldn't be looking to purchase woodworking
supplies either. But somebody searching for a "DeWalt
13 Inch Planer" is probably looking to purchase a
new planer for their shop.
| The idea becomes to use very detailed, specific
keywords in order to attract a highly targeted
visitor, and then to direct them to a page that
offers exactly what they are seeking. In the case of
the planer, you could route that searcher to a page
that gives a short review and/or description of the
DeWalt planer and then have your affiliate link on
the page where they could go to make their purchase.
There are thousands upon thousands of products where
you can work with this sort of business model. |
 |
But you can see how someone searching for a specific
product or product model number is much more likely
to be in the buying mode. They may be looking for
comments/reviews from other people that have
purchased the same product, or they may be shopping
for the best price. Either way, that makes them
probable buyers and those are the people you want to
go after.
Keep it Realistic
When selecting your keywords
the goal should be to obtain a top ranking at Google
for the keyword(s) that you choose. This means that
you will need to analyze the competition for that
keyword. Find out which sites are already ranking
for the keyword and determine how easy the site
would be to knock out of the top rank. You can learn
more about making this analysis in the SEO section.
You will most likely find that
the premium money making keywords in your niche are
going to be very difficult to get ranked highly. The
people holding the top positions have likely worked
very hard for a long time to obtain those rankings.
But that doesn't mean that there is no keyword gold
left in your niche. It just means you have to mine
for it and that is where effective keyword research
pays off in a big way.
With all of this being said,
don't assume that the premium money keywords are out
of reach in your niche. Analyze them to be sure.
There are some under exposed niche markets where top
rankings for top keywords may still be possible.
Doing effective research should allow you to uncover
those gems.
