The screen shot below
is of the home page at the Digg bookmarking site.
When somebody bookmarks a site on Digg.com, they
call it a "digg". Logical I guess. In the left
column you will see sites that have received several
recent diggs. I have circled in red, three that have
received more than 200 diggs! That is a lot of
people bookmarking a site. The fact that these
bookmarks are on the front page of Digg means that
they are likely to receive even more diggs, which
means the site has sort of started to go viral.

The red arrows on the right of
the image are pointing to some of the top bookmarks
on the site. The top site listed has over 3700 diggs.
I am sure they are seeing quite a bit of traffic
from that listing!
Really
Simple Syndication (RSS)
To this point we have discussed creating
content on various sites that will contain a
backlink to your money site. We also discussed
publicly bookmarking those content pages as well as
your money sites.
When I refer to content pages in this paragraph I am
referring to the pages such as Blogger, Hub Pages,
Squidoo, You Tube etc where you will create off site
(not on your site) content. Now let's discuss the
submission of your RSS feed to the RSS aggregators.
All of your content page providers will not openly
offer you an RSS feed url, but many of them will. In
fact some of them will have widgets/plugins that
will allow your visitor to subscribe to your RSS
feed directly from your content page. From that time
on, any time you update that page they will receive
a notice that the page has been updated. This not
real useful for us as the content pages you will
likely be creating will not be updated in the
future. It is usually more beneficial to create new
content pages as opposed to updating the ones we
have.
However we want to submit the
RSS feeds to the RSS aggregators because you can
pick up visits from folks visiting the aggregator's
site looking for feeds on specific subject matter.
When they see something they like they visit the
site in the feed. They may or may not decide to
subscribe, but that is of very little importance to
us. The exception to this would be if you are
publishing your content on a blog where youo would
be updating the content regularly. In that case a
RSS subscriber is a wonderful thing.
Just as with the bookmarking, there are many, many
RSS aggregator sites to which you can submit your
feeds. Again it is a numbers game so the more
submissions you make, the better for your traffic
building efforts.
Social Bookmarking at a Glance

Wrapping it
Up
Okay, so maybe you'll get traffic from social
bookmarks and maybe you won't. But the fact of the
matter is that I can submit a social bookmark for my
site to several hundred social bookmarking
directories and that is one heck of a lot of
backlinks. That will do wonders for my rankings in
the search engines. So although you may not see a
massive amount of traffic directly from the
bookmarks, you will see traffic indirectly as your
site's ranking improves through the addition of all
the backlinks. Make sense? It is also true that some
backlinks will have more value than others. I
discuss that in more detail in the SEO section. You
will also see some traffic from your RSS feed
submissions.
There is a great service at
www.socialmarker.com that allows you to submit
several bookmarks at one time to several different
bookmarking sites. It's free and easy to use.
It would be a great deal of work to do this
manually. Fortunately software exists that automates
the process. Software exists for mass submitting
articles to article directories. Software also
exists for mass submitting your bookmarks to hundred
s of social bookmarking sites. Of course there is
also software to mass submit your RSS feeds.
Should you decide to automate your submissions, I
have presented my recommendations below. I also
recommend the use of a software called SENuke which
does all of this and more and is all rolled up into
one piece of software. You can take SENuke for a
seven day free trial at the link I have provided in
the left column of this page. The downside of SENuke
is that it carries a monthly fee that is expensive,
but it is worth every penny of you have the budget
for it.
The submission work can
also be outsourced. You can usually find people
willing to do this sort of work in the Internet
Marketing forums as well as elance.com. If you need
more traffic (who doesn't), then it may be time to
kick your marketing efforts up a notch with some
social marketing.
Only Wire
Only Wire is a free tool that can get that allow
others to bookmark your site. If you can make the
process of bookmarking your site as easy as possible
it will only encourage your visitors to bookmark it.
More bookmarks means more traffic and that of course
is our objective.

Once you setup your free
account at onlywire.com, you will access a small bit
of code that you will need to stick on your website
or blog. Don't worry it is easy to do and they offer
plenty of instruction for doing this. Once you have
the code installed where you want it this button
will be displayed on your site.

Now anytime anybody goes to
click the button a small popup window will appear
offering them a menu of 30 different sites where
they can bookmark your site. They simply click on
the small icon of their favorite social bookmarking
site and proceed to place their bookmark. Here is a
screenshot of the options your visitors will be
offered through the Only Wire service.

Social bookmarking is a key ingredient if you are
looking for free targeted traffic. Start with this
general information I have provided to you and
increase your knowledge as your comfort level rises.
You have a lot of work to do
so you might as well get started.
