The 5 Most Critical Marketing Elements
of a Product According to Billy Mays...

I am sure you have seen this lovable mug on television many times. Of course this is the infamous Billy Mays. Billy was perhaps the godfather of the tv infomercial pitchmen.

Billy has passed on now but he has left quite a legacy. We were allowed a small glimpse into the mind of this marketer via his Discovery television show, "Pitchmen".

He and his co-star Anthony Sullivan displayed an extraordinary amount of marketing savvy in their show every week. They often went at each other vigorously, but they agreed on the key elements a product must have before they were willing to consider it for a marketing campaign.

Billy Mays

When taking the first look at a new product being pitched to them, they looked at five filters immediately;

#1 Does the product have mass appeal?
#2 Can the  product be demonstrated with a WOW factor?
#3 Does it solve a problem?
#4 Is the product new or unique?
#5 Does it give instant gratification?

The video below shows Billy and Sully discussing their product requirements.
There are a ton of videos of Billy on You Tube. Just search his name in their search box.

How Can These Filters be Applied Towards Online Marketing?

Mass Appeal- Obviously we all would love to market to the largest audience possible. You can do so by working with CPA offers for teeth whitening, weight loss, cell phones etc. Those are all products with mass appeal.

You will almost always find that the mass appeal markets are very competitive and can be hard to establish a good marketing position within. That is why many marketers prefer to find a niche market and make their best effort there. In this case it is as simple as making sure that your product has mass appeal within that niche market.

You don't have to be marketing to a huge market to be successful. Just make sure that your product appeals to a large enough segment of any market that it has a reasonable chance of being successful based on your goals and expectations.

Product Demonstration- Can informational products be demonstrated? Well I think so. If you are selling an ebook take the prospective customer inside the book by making an audio recording of the first chapter, or maybe a "leaked" chapter. Add the wow factor with enthusiasm in your voice. If you are excited about a product then your prospect is likely to feed off of that excitement and want a part of it.

If your product includes audio and or video, then provide a sample. The same applies to marketing software. How about providing a free trial? Put the product in their hands and let them discover the wow factor.

If you are selling a make money online product then the wow factor could come from showing proof of your income in a screen capture video. Maybe you could show them a video of the great lifestyle you have been able to create because of your success with the product.

So yes, I think informational products can be demonstrated with a wow factor.

Solves a Problem- I think this one is fairly self explanatory. The only thing to really say here is just make sure your product solves a problem that people need fixed. Make sure it is a problem that they are highly motivated to fix as well.

Uniqueness- Make your product different from everything else on the market. You are the only person on earth that has your exact personality. So an easy way to make a product unique is to simply inject your own personality into your product.

Many things can make a product unique. The cost, the way it is delivered, the manner in which the content is presented etc, can all make a product unique.

Instant Gratification- If your product solves a problem quickly then you have this one covered. This could also mean just providing the solution quickly. Not every problem can be fixed in a short time period, but if you can show a person quickly how the problem can be solved then that is instant gratification as well.

Although these filters may require a little bit of adaptation to be used with niche marketing, I think they are very useful when considering your next product development or selection.

I was a big fan of Billy. I liked the guy from his early days with Oxy Clean. How could you not like the guy?  I am glad to see they are still running his t.v. spots because somehow I am sure that is the way he wanted it.

R.I.P. Billy...
